Sergio Ramos is back at Sevilla Fútbol Club, the club where Spain’s record international broke as a teenager. The 37-year-old defender from Camas left the club on August 31, 2005, but is back in the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán three days later at the age of eighteen. Ramos has signed a contract until the end of the season.
Clubs can register new players all day today for this season in a European context. This means that Sevilla can play with Sergio Ramos against PSV, Arsenal and Racing Club de Lens in the coming months.
Sevilla only finished twelfth in La Liga last season, the worst performance in this century, but did win the UEFA Cup/Europa League for the seventh time in seventeen years. That has meant automatic placement for the Champions League for a few years now, so Ramos can prepare for duels with Luuk de Jong on October 3 and November 29.
Spain’s record international, who played his 180th and last international match on March 21, 2021, meets a childhood friend during his first football love. Shortly after Ramos, Jesús Navas also broke through at Sevilla. Where Navas now stands at 654 games for Sevilla, Ramos left after 49 games Los Rojiblancos.
Ramos broke through stormily in a strong team with Dani Alves, Júlio Baptista, Renato, Adriano, Jesús Navas and his childhood friend Antonio Puerta who died in 2007 as teammates. As an energetic defender with many offensive qualities, Ramos immediately asserted himself in La Liga as a teenager and in March 2005 he also became a Spanish international, after which it was clear that he could not be kept for Sevilla.
671 matches for Real Madrid
On August 31, 2005, five months after his nineteenth birthday, he left for Real Madrid for 27 million euros. At the Spanish superpower, he started as an emerging back, but quickly became the undisputed leader of the defense and later of the entire team. After the departure of Iker Casillas to FC Porto in 2015, Ramos was the captain of Real Madrid for another six years. He won La Liga five times and the Champions League four times The Royal. Ramos played 671 games for Real Madrid, in which he scored 101 times and gave 40 assists.
After quite a few injuries, Ramos came into an unexpected clash with Real Madrid in 2021. He wanted at least a new two-year contract as captain, but chairman Florentino Pérez was willing to let the club icon go for free. Ramos then left for Paris Saint-Germain, where he was presented together with Lionel Messi, Georginio Wijnaldum and Gianluigi Donnarumma. PSG seemed ready to really win the Champions League with those stars, but despite two French titles, the past two years in Paris have mainly been dominated by unrest, grumpiness and frustration.
Luis Enrique, who no longer needed Ramos with the Spanish team, made a clean sweep in the Parc des Princes last summer. After Lionel Messi, Neymar, Wijnaldum and Marco Verratti, Ramos also leaves. The 37-year-old defender has been training hard for himself in recent months, as he showed almost daily with videos and photos to his 61 million followers on Instagram.
The Turkish top clubs Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe competed with a few clubs from Saudi Arabia for Ramos’ signature, but he ultimately prefers the sentiment to a major final financial blow. Ramos can work with Sevilla, which, just like last year, has started badly in La Liga with zero points from the first three matches. The away match at Atlético Madrid was canceled on Sunday due to the extreme rainfall in the Spanish capital.
Sevilla resumes the competition on Sunday September 17 with the home game against Las Palmas, three days later the duel with RC Lens is already on the program. The question will be when Ramos will be fully fit again, because he played his last game three months ago.
