Recently he even duped his teammate, the reigning world champion Max Verstappen – now Sergio Perez rewards himself and expresses himself emotionally.
Sergio Perez will remain teammate of world champion Max Verstappen at the top racing team Red Bull Racing in Formula 1 in the coming years. The Mexican extended his contract until 2024, the team announced on Tuesday – two days after Perez’s victory in the Grand Prix from Monaco.
“It was an incredible week for me,” said Perez: “Winning Monaco is a dream for every driver. Announcing my contract extension now makes me extremely happy. I’m proud to be part of this team.”
Perez had initially received two one-year contracts since arriving at Red Bull in early 2021, and now the former series world champions are tying him up for two more years for the first time. The 32-year-old initially found it extremely difficult against Verstappen, but recently he moved closer to the Dutchman.
“Checo did a great job”
In Monaco, for example, he was consistently faster than the defending champion, and after the win, Perez is only just behind Verstappen (125) and Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc (Monaco/116) with 110 points. “Since he came to Red Bull, Checo has done a fantastic job,” said team boss Christian Horner: “Not only is he a great team player, he has also become a driver who you always have to reckon with at the top.”
At the end of 2020, Perez was about to lose Formula 1: the newly named Aston Martin racing team took Sebastian Vettel at the time, Perez had to go. The place at Red Bull only became available at short notice. The top team now has planning security for a while: Verstappen recently extended his contract up to and including 2028.
