Serge Heijnen draws a line under his handball career | 1Limburg

Handballer Serge Heijnen will stop playing handball after the end of this season.

The Limburg Lions player cites physical discomfort as the main reason for his decision to stop. “When I wake up, my body feels like that of a 35-year-old,” said Heijnen, who comes from Schinnen on the club’s site.

Quit at 28
Performing at the top level has taken its toll. Training six times a week and playing matches, and two long-term knee injuries have made the 28-year-old player decide to put the handball shoes away for good at the end of the season.

The triple in 2015
Heijnen came to the Lions as a 17-year-old player. He achieved his greatest successes under trainer Monique Tijsterman. In the 2014/2015 season, Heijnen managed to reach the triple with Limburg Lions; both the BENE-League, the Dutch cup and the national championship were won.

Last price possibly the national title
Heijnen is currently still in the race with the Sittard club for a place in the final in the battle for the national championship. The away game against Aalsmeer awaits on Saturday. On June 4, the last competition match against Volendam will be played in the Stadssporthal in Sittard. When reaching the final for the national championship, the Limburger will have a maximum of three more matches.
