Serena Williams hints at Wimbledon comeback

Former tennis world number one Serena Williams has indicated her comeback after a year’s break for the grass classic in Wimbledon.

The 23-time Grand Slam tournament winner wrote on Instagram: “SW and SW19. It’s a date. 2022 See you there. Let’s go”. SW19 stands for the London borough of Wimbledon, where the tournament begins on June 27 this year.

The 40-year-old Williams published the image of two legs in tennis shoes on the lawn. She left it open whether Williams really wanted to compete in singles or, for example, play the doubles competition.

In her post, she also referred to the grass tournament in Eastbourne next week. Maybe the American will return to the tour there.

Return possible with wildcard

Williams was missing from the registration list for Wimbledon that the organizers published a week and a half ago. However, she can still apply for a wildcard and celebrate her return.

Seven-time Wimbledon champion Williams played her last match at the All England Club a year ago when the American retired injured in the first round against Alexandra Sasnovich of Belarus.

Due to her long absence from the professional tour, there had also been speculation of a possible impending retirement. With another Grand Slam title, Serena Williams would equal Australia’s Margaret Court’s record.
