Serena Williams wants to advance women’s sports. Now the former professional player is getting in at an up -and -coming club.
Tennis icon Serena Williams got on at the Canadian women’s basketball team Toronto Toronto. “I am very happy to be able to announce my role as the owner of the first Canadian WNBA team,” said the 43-year-old in a franchise press release.
It is “at this moment not only about basketball, but also about showing the true value and the potential of female athletes. I have always said that women’s sport offers incredible investment opportunities,” said Williams.
Toronto Tempo is currently still under construction and will compete in the WNBA women’s profile in the 2026 season, in which only US teams will take part. So far, the Canadian businessman Larry Tanenbaum has been the sole owner. The 23-time Grand Slam winner Williams should actively contribute to the design of the jerseys and merchandising in the future.
For the former tennis player who ended her career in 2022, it is not the first investment in sport. Williams already holds shares in the women’s football franchise Angel City FC and at the NFL team Miami Dolphins.
