Sending money by post: How senders can stay safe

Whether it’s a birthday, wedding or graduating from high school – there are countless occasions for sending money. To ensure that the money sent reaches the recipient safely, there are a few things you should keep in mind.

Cash insured up to 100 euros

Valuable items such as jewelry, precious metals or cash should generally not be sent by post as they are not insured. However, sending smaller amounts of cash with a maximum value of 100 euros is possible via “REGISTERED MAIL,” explains an article from Deutsche Post. You can send money particularly securely with this service for an additional charge of 4.45 euros on top of normal letter postage. Liability up to 100 euros in cash is assumed. However, the service only applies to shipments within Germany – cash with international value cannot be sent abroad.

Send securely via “REGISTERED MAIL”.

So that no one can determine the contents of the envelope, the money should be sent in a normal, opaque envelope that is as inconspicuous as possible. The money should not be tangible. The unfranked letter is then taken to the post office, where a branch employee franks it accordingly and a receipt is issued. Shipping is insured and can be tracked precisely using the tracking number. According to Deutsche Post, the letter should reach the recipient in one or two working days – depending on the delivery date. As soon as the shipment has arrived, the sender will receive a confirmation of receipt.

Larger amounts of money via bank transfer

Larger amounts of money should be sent by bank transfer or other payment services such as PayPal, recommends the HELPSTER guide. The sender has the opportunity to enter a personal message in the subject line. Optionally, the sender can also send an accompanying greeting card to the recipient to make the monetary gift more personal.
