Joe Chialo will announce the new general music director of the Unter den Linden State Opera on September 27th at 12 p.m. A possible name is Christian Thielemann.

Daniel Barenboim’s successor as general music director of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden is to be announced on September 27th. Accordingly, Senator for Culture Joe Chialo wants to speak at a press conference at 12 p.m. about the position that has been vacant since the beginning of the year.

Meanwhile, the “Berliner Zeitung” reports, with reference to several independent sources, that Christian Thielemann is to become Barenboim’s successor. Until the end he had referred to his still valid contract with the Dresden Staatskapelle. Thielemann has long been considered a favorite for the position.

Senator for Culture Chialo coordinated the decision closely with the future director of the State Opera, Elisabeth Sobotka. She will take over the position on September 1, 2024 from Matthias Schulz, who is moving to the Zurich Opera House. As artistic director, Sobotka has the right to propose the position of general music director.
