Tennis professional Tatjana Maria is in the main field at the US Open, the US Open announced.
Because the Russian Anastasiya Pavlyuchenkowa canceled her participation in the last Grand Slam of the season due to an injury, the Wimbledon semi-finalist moved up and can save herself the qualification.
In her tenth Wimbledon participation and the 35th start in a Grand Slam tournament, the mother of two had recently come as far as never before: Only in the semifinals was Ons Jabeur from Tunisia, second in the world rankings, 2: 6, 6: 3, 1:6 final. Because of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, the organizers had excluded all Russian and Belarusian players – in response, the professional organizations ATP and WTA canceled the world ranking points for the tournament. Maria didn’t jump much in the rankings because of this and hardly capitalizes on her great success in future tournaments.
Thanks to Pavlyuchenkowa’s withdrawal, she is now the fourth German player in the main draw alongside Angelique Kerber, Laura Siegemund and Andrea Petkovic. Jule Niemeier, who made it to the quarter-finals in Wimbledon and lost to Maria there, is not yet in the main draw and has to qualify. The US Open will be played from August 29th to September 11th.
