CU leader Gert-Jan Segers is further increasing the pressure in the coalition by saying that approval of the law for compulsory asylum reception should not be linked to new measures to prevent the influx of asylum seekers. That is exactly what the VVD is aiming for.
“In the event of a negative outcome, we really have a problem in the coalition,” Segers said on Tuesday afternoon after the CU group meeting. He does not accept that the VVD faction says ‘no’ to the law that requires asylum reception to be spread across the country. “We’ve been talking about this for weeks, we just need that law.”
Segers now does not want to take any extra measures to limit the influx of asylum seekers. “It is legitimate to talk about migration, and control migration. I’m willing to have a longer and deeper conversation about that. But not in relation to this law. We already made agreements this summer about influx: the Turkey deal is temporarily suspended, agreements have also been made about family reunification.”
The CU supporters have previously indicated that they have great difficulty with the fact that accepted asylum seekers have to wait longer for reunification with their family members. There is also resistance from coalition party D66 to further restrict the influx of asylum seekers.
Part of the VVD parliamentary party in the House of Representatives opposes the obligation for municipalities to receive asylum seekers. Some want more to be done to halt the expected strong influx of asylum seekers to the Netherlands. Prime Minister Rutte visited the VVD faction on Tuesday to get everyone in the same direction. It is still unknown whether the VVD will support the asylum law.
