Part of the province has been dealing with high water for more than a week. The water is (extremely) high, especially in Hoorn, Enkhuizen and Volendam. Piles of sandbags have dominated the street scene there ever since. Some North Hollanders are not waiting and are taking action themselves to protect their homes against rising water.
Due to the combination of high water and strong winds, extremely high water is expected in some places in the province. The KNMI has also noticed storm Henk Code orange has been announced from 10 p.m. tonight. The NS has announced that due to the storm between Heerhugowaard and Den Helder there will be a adjusted timetable to drive.
Sandbags
Earlier today, the bicycle tunnel at the Broekerhaven in Bovenkarspel was completed closed. The Hollands Noorderkwartier Water Board took the measure because of the strong wind.
Rijkswaterstaat previously announced in a response to NH that the high water level in combination with strong winds will push up the water. Because the wind blows from the southwest, the water level will decrease at Volendam and Edam, while it will rise on the north side of the lake, near Enkhuizen and Hoorn.
Last week the water of the Markermeer started to rise rapidly, due to abundant rainfall and full rivers. Because the excess water cannot or hardly be drained to the IJsselmeer, the water level in the Markermeer remains very high.
Areas outside the dikes
The municipality of Waterland said in a response this evening: “Due to the expected weather conditions in the coming days with strong wind and rain in combination with high water levels, we expect flooding in the areas outside the dikes within our municipality.” It therefore takes preventive measures. Sandbags are currently being placed at various locations in Monnickendam.
