What was this mistake then? The same one that Lindgren had repeated numerous times before. In the autumn of 1959, the man had returned from a scam trip to continental Europe to his then homeland of Sweden. He settled in the Motala city hotel and wanted to impress the local sophistication. He invited the whole circle to the hotel for an evening out, which he had no intention of paying. This time, however, the receptionist was awake and guessed the burnt carriage. The young woman contacted police who arrested Lindgren. A series of scams was soon revealed that had left victims all over Sweden. The offender was sentenced to six years in prison and deportation.

Lindgren had pretended to be Count von Oxenstierna, but at times he also used von Heidenstam as his surname. Lindgren had also claimed to be a flight captain, prison manager, German Dr. Schröder, pastor Melin, Italian archaeologist Beniamino Torrini, lawyer Wallendorf, and Filipino director Bernard af Creutz, among others. On that side, he had engaged several women with dishonest intent.
– I have been convicted of 76 engagements. I have seduced between 400 and 500 women, Lindgren himself estimated for Sweden’s SVT in 1986.
