Security guards at Schiphol get 2.50 extra per hour and better schedules

The salary of security guards at Schiphol Airport will increase by 2.50 euros per hour from next month. In addition, there will be better, predictable schedules. With the adjustments, Schiphol is trying to improve the working conditions of security guards, to keep them committed for longer and to solve the staff shortage.

According to many security guards, the disappearance of the summer bonus was the biggest cause of the staff shortage at Schiphol. earlier this week It was also announced that one in three security guards would like to quit their job because of the ‘unacceptably’ high workload, low salary and security concerns.

Hourly wage increases by €2.50

To prevent a further outflow of security officers, Schiphol will invest in salary from next month, among other things. For example, an ‘object surcharge’ of €2.50 replaces the summer bonus and people who start before 05.30 am receive an extra surcharge.

The rosters are also being looked at: “The good news is that from 1 January the security officers will have to deal with better rosters, which are a lot more predictable. The number of entry points will be drastically reduced, to a maximum of ten”, says trade union negotiator Erik Maas. know.

He looks positively at the developments: “At the same time, we must not be naive. The problem is not solved with just a little extra money (..). The high workload is not easily solved. The dissatisfaction is deep and for many security guards that is a reason to look for other work. Schiphol will really have to show that they want to do everything they can to be a good client, where people are central.”
