Secretary of State Uslu leads cultural mission to Indonesia | News item

State Secretary Gunay Uslu (Culture and Media) will visit Indonesia from 11 to 16 September. She has been invited by the Indonesian government to participate in the G20 culture ministers’ meeting. In addition, she leads a mission that includes representatives of Dutch cultural institutions in the field of heritage, film and archiving. Lilian Gonçalves, chair of the Advisory Committee on the Return of Cultural Goods Colonial Context, will also be traveling along.

Cultural and creative collaboration

With Sandiaga Uno, the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, State Secretary Uslu confirms the good cooperation between Indonesia and the Netherlands in the field of design, film and photography. Uslu speaks with Nadiem Makarim, the Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology about the excellent links in the field of art and culture. She will also talk to him about the return of collections with a colonial context.

Meetings are scheduled in Jakarta with young makers of Institut Kesenian Jakarta. The State Secretary will also visit the Arsip National (the National Archives), the National Museumvarious art institutions and JIPFEST, the Jakarta International Photo Festival.

Return colonial collections

In the Indonesian capital, State Secretary Uslu and Ms Gonçalves speak with representatives of the Indonesian government. The Gonçalves Committee will assess requests for the return of cultural objects that may have been illegally brought to the Netherlands during colonial times and which are now on display in Dutch museums. Countries of origin, such as Indonesia, can submit these requests. The committee is expected to start its work this fall.

G20

State Secretary Uslu has been invited by the host country Indonesia to participate in the G20 meeting of culture ministers. She and her fellow ministers discuss the state of the cultural field after corona and the contribution that culture can make to a more sustainable world. In addition, she has bilateral meetings with the Indonesian Minister of Culture Nadiem Makarim and her German counterpart Claudia Roth.
