Second round in the DFB Cup: Düsseldorf made everything clear early on against Regensburg

Status: 10/19/2022 11:27 p.m

In the second division duel with SSV Jahn Regensburg, Fortuna Düsseldorf set the course for victory early on and confidently reached the round of 16 of the DFB Cup.

Coach Daniel Thioune’s team celebrated 3-0 (3-0) away in the second round on Wednesday evening (October 19th, 2022) and thus redeemed themselves for the poor performance in the 0-1 draw against Nuremberg at the weekend. Regensburg, who threw 1. FC Köln out of the competition in the first round, could not repeat the performance of the weekend when they defeated Kaiserslautern in the league.

Kristoffer Peterson (5th minute) and Dawid Kownacki (16th) scored early for Fortuna, Emmanuel Iyoha increased just before half-time (45th).

Early double strike for Fortuna Düsseldorf

The Düsseldorf started at lightning speed – and had a little help. Regensburg keeper Dejan Stojanovic let a shot from Peterson, which was actually relatively unplaced, slip past his body and thus favored the early lead. However, the ball touched down just before the goalkeeper.

Shortly thereafter, Stojanovic cut a much better figure when he defused a big chance from Kownacki, who should have scored after a cross from the right. After a good quarter of an hour, the Pole made up for it. After a strong combination, Michal Karbownik’s buttery cross found Kownacki’s head from the left – 2:0.

Regensburg gets better – and concedes the next goal

Up until the half-time break, both opponents still had one or the other opportunity in a lively cup game. Regensburg got stronger, especially in the final minutes: Kaan Caliskaner found his master twice in quick succession in Düsseldorf goalkeeper Florian Kastenmeier (38th and 40th). When Jahn had actually slowly earned the goal, the Düsseldorfers gave him another blow in the neck: Iyoha completed a well-presented attack after Kownacki had placed his heel from the edge of the penalty area to make it 3-0.

Not much going on in half two

In view of the clear score, the game flattened out significantly in the second half. Regensburg made an effort, but the guests were mostly stable and had switched to management mode early on. The Regensburg fans, who were vociferous despite the deficit, had the goal scream on their lips in the 70th minute, but then had to realize that Joshua Mees’ shot had only hit the side netting. Not much more happened. The game stalled.
