The shelling between the Israeli army and Palestinian militiamen will enter their second day on Saturday. An Israeli army plane has hit targets in the Gaza Strip and several towns in Israel have been shelled from Palestinian territories. It is not yet known if there are any injuries.
Earlier on Saturday, 19 members of Islamic Jihad were detained in the West Bank. Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid says he is not interested in a major conflict with Hamas and Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip, “but is not afraid to do so either”.
The shelling began Friday when Israel launched an attack on the Gaza Strip. Ten people were killed and 79 injured, the Palestinian health ministry said. Israel said the attack was aimed at Islamic Jihad. Four of the dead were members of that group.
Palestine responded by firing 160 rockets at Israel; most of these were intercepted. However, a number of people were injured.
