After the embarrassing 3:3 (2:0) on Saturday at VfB Stuttgart, Borussia Dortmund’s nerves are on edge. BVB sports director Sebastian Kehl chooses clear words – and criticizes the team relentlessly.
“I just have a complete incomprehension about this second half. It’s a big disappointment, frustration, a certain aggressiveness that I just felt after the game. I have to let it sink in first. We’ve broken a lot,” said Kehl after the game to journalists.
BVB initially lost a 2-0 lead against the Swabians, who were in acute danger of relegation, with goals from Sébastien Haller (26th) and Donyell Malen (33rd). Tanguy Coulibaly (78′) and Josha Vagnoman (84′) equalized for VfB.
Then came the completely crazy final phase: Giovanni Reyna (90th +2) scored to put BVB back in the lead, Silas Katompa Mvumpa (97th) scored the much-acclaimed equalizer for the home side – a last-minute setback that drove Kehl up the wall . Especially since the Stuttgarters were outnumbered for a long time after the yellow-red card against Konstantinos Mavropanos (39th).
BVB: “You have to do that against ten people”
“Even though we make it 3-2, run into a situation where we’re not compact and make individual mistakes – that can’t be explained,” rumbled the long-time BVB captain.
FC Bayern’s 1-1 draw in the parallel game against 1899 Hoffenheim didn’t cheer Kehl up either. “I’m brutally annoyed with myself and less with what happened in Munich.” He is currently “not strategic and analytical, just angry,” added the 43-year-old ex-professional.
“We conceded four goals in the second half – you have to do that against ten people first,” said Kehl, referring to Serhou Guirassy’s goal (52′), which was disallowed for being offside.
