Bundesliga fan series
After the 2nd and 3rd Bundesliga, Transfermarkt will also take a detailed look at the 18 teams in the Bundesliga with the help of the community in the coming days. Which players are the fans looking forward to the most, where is there room for improvement and what is in the squad for 2022/23 for your favorite club? We asked around in the forums and got our opinions – in league one we continue with user “Schilkseeschnack” and Werder Bremen.
How do you rate the Werder Bremen squad?
Frank Baumann managed to keep the squad that managed to get promoted together, apart from Ömer Toprak. This means that almost the same well-rehearsed starting eleven from the second division is available. On the access side, Mitchell Weiser, who was initially on loan, was recently signed on. Before that, the Bundesliga experienced central defenders Amos Pieper, Niklas Stark and young player Dikeni Salifou were signed for defensive midfield very early on, followed by Jens Stage (attacking midfield) and the Englishmen Oliver Burke (forward) and Lee Buchanan (left-back).
With the exception of Stage (4 million euros), all newcomers were free of charge. The squad has at least one player with Bundesliga experience in every position. Baumann has done his best given the finances and has strengthened almost every area on paper. With the squad, the goal of staying in the league appears possible via relegation if necessary, although some players first have to get used to the league.
Where do you see room for improvement by Deadline Day?
I see a need above all in defensive midfield, this is where the biggest problem position is, because an above-average six is missing. A deficiency that has already accompanied Werder in the last Bundesliga years. According to Baumann, the planning has been completed and there is basically no money for further, even free transfers, but one is on the lookout for a transfer that can be financed.
Since our season starts today with the first competitive game, I would like to go into our squad and give my opinion on it. Since the end of the season I’ve watched a few minutes of the friendlies on YouTube, I was in the stadium against Besiktas and otherwise I’ve read a lot about our preparation.
I assume that our preferred basic formation will remain the 3-5-2 (or 5-3-2) from the previous season. As an alternative, depending on the opponent and the staff, I would like to see the classic 4-…
What do you expect from the playful appearance of Werder Bremen?
The 3-5-2 basic order practiced under Ole Werner in the second division will be retained and initially staffed with the promotion squad. As the preparation so far indicates, only one of the newcomers, Pieper, will get a place in the starting lineup. In contrast to the second league, in which Werder was able to dominate the opponents mostly offensively with the most successful striker duo in the league, a class higher will require a more stable defense because most opponents are likely to be forced back on the defensive.
Nevertheless, I expect a courageous transition game from a stable defense with an attempt to intersperse longer phases of possession against some opponents. Werner should also propagate and favor the latter in the Bundesliga.
What’s in it for Werder Bremen in 2022/23?
In view of the tight funds, the squad could only be strengthened across the board, combined with the hope that the newcomers would also develop into qualitative reinforcements. You can’t fool yourself, the only goal can only be staying up, because with this squad it doesn’t seem possible anymore. If there is no exceptionally positive performance development, Werder will fight for 15th or 16th place until the end.
