Season off for injured Uwe Gensheimer

Former national team captain Uwe Gensheimer will not return to the field this handball season.

The left winger from Bundesliga club Rhein-Neckar Löwen has to have an operation on his damaged Achilles tendon and will probably be out for four to six months.

“The injury has gotten worse,” said coach Ljubomir Vranjes on Tuesday at “Sky”. “He was in too much pain, the solution is surgery. It’s probably better for the future if he does it now.”

For the ambitious lions, who are only tenth in the table anyway, this is an enormous weakening. “Uwe is a world-class player. Young players can take over, but not at this level,” said Vranjes.

Gensheimer (35) has already had to take a few forced breaks this season due to injuries and illness, so the captain only made eleven league appearances.
