The bodies of 14 people buried under the rubble of a landslide were found today, army chief Dudung Abdurachman said. “We are still looking for victims,” he said. “A drinking establishment was completely buried under masses of earth, we don’t know if anyone was able to escape.”
Rescue workers are using excavators to clear areas cut off from the outside world by the mudslides. The devastation is immense.
The earthquake occurred on Monday afternoon (local time) about 70 kilometers southeast of the capital Jakarta, at a depth of ten kilometers. The epicenter was near the city of Cianjur, where the heaviest damage has also been reported.
