A diary, blackout lamp or stack of letters from the Second World War. Maybe they are in your attic or in the display cabinet. Would you like to know more about them, would you like to tell a story about them or would you like to house them at a heritage institution in the province of Groningen? Then come with your object, document or photo from the wartime to the Groninger Do Not Throw Away Tour in Victory Museum Grootegast.

The Groninger Don’t Throw Away Tour is organized by the Noordelijk Scheepvaartmuseum (future Museum aan de A), Battlefield Tours and the War and Resistance Center Groningen in collaboration with the Victory Museum in Grootegast and the War Museum Middelstum. The tour ties in with the national Action Not Throwing Away: an initiative of museums and institutions involved in the Second World War. The aim is to save objects and documents from the war years that are still at home in the attic for the future.

Stories behind the objects

During the Groninger Niet Agoen Tour we are looking for stories behind objects, documents and photos from the war. Visitors engage in conversation with World War II experts about the item they brought with them. How do they get it, what do they think of it, and how do they keep it? The experts in turn tell about the striking features of the object, or more about the historical context. What was it used for? All stories that come up during the Groninger Niet Awegen Tour are noted and written out later. This way the day is registered properly. The stories can be read after the tour on groningen4045.nl.

Include in the collection

The curators of the heritage institutions involved may be interested in including certain pieces in the collection. Of course you don’t have to: visitors can also keep their objects and documents at home if they want to. The Second World War experts who, in varying composition, are part of the Groninger Niet Agoen Tour are: Heiko Ates (Victory Museum), Ties Groenewold (War Museum Middelstum), Gert Kortekaas (Northern Maritime Museum), Anna van der Molen (OVCG), Joël Stoppels (Battlefield Tours) and Geert Volders (Synagogue Groningen).
