The search for Ernst-Volker Staub and Burkhard Garweg is in full swing. Now the police are reporting searches in the capital.
A police operation is currently underway in Berlin-Friedrichshain as part of the search for the ex-RAF terrorists Ernst-Volker Staub and Burkhard Garweg. This was confirmed by a spokeswoman for the Lower Saxony State Criminal Police Office (LKA) to t-online. “Searches are currently underway by the LKA Lower Saxony, the Federal Criminal Police Office and the Berlin police.” Accordingly, the operation began at 7:30 a.m. in a commercial area on the corner of Markgrafendamm and Persiusstrasse.
After a dpa reporter observed the police took away two men. The spokeswoman did not initially confirm this. According to pictures, the special operations command (SEK) is also on site.
Just yesterday, the Verden public prosecutor’s office and the Lower Saxony LKA published new mugshots that “very likely” show Burkhard Garweg. In this context, it was said that Garweg and his accomplice Staub could still be in Berlin or in the Berlin area. Citizens should not approach those they are looking for themselves as they may be armed.

The former RAF terrorists Burkhard Garweg (55) and his accomplice Ernst-Volker Staub (69) are at the top of Europol’s “Europe’s Most Wanted” list, which is used to search for serious criminals and terrorists. Her accomplice Daniela Klette (65) was arrested in Berlin-Kreuzberg on Monday after more than 30 years of manhunt (read more about it here). It remained unclear whether all three were together until Klette’s arrest.
Hints
The LKA Lower Saxony will receive information from the public about the whereabouts of Burkhard Garweg, also in connection with the dogs pictured, or about his suspected accomplice Ernst-Volker Staub on 0511 9873-7400 or any other police station.
Robberies on cash trucks and supermarkets
The three suspected former RAF terrorists Klette, Staub and Garweg are said to have committed robberies on money transporters and supermarkets in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia between 1999 and 2016. They are also accused of attempted murder because shots were fired during robberies. There are also arrest warrants on suspicion of involvement in terrorist attacks. Klette, who is in custody, is keeping quiet about the allegations, according to the public prosecutor’s office.
Garweg, Klette and Staub belong to the so-called third generation of the left-wing extremist organization Red Army Faction (RAF). During their active time, the then Deutsche Bank boss Alfred Herrhausen (1989) and Treuhand boss Detlev Karsten Rohwedder (1991) were murdered, and Herrhausen’s driver was seriously injured. In 1998 the RAF declared itself disbanded.
