The seal pup born much too early that was found yesterday on the beach of Texel did not survive. This morning, caretakers of Ecomare found the animal dead.
The pup was found alive on the beach yesterday with the placenta still attached to the umbilical cord. Never before has this happened to caretakers of Ecomare. “That also says something, that the animal is lying there abandoned,” explains a caretaker at Ecomare. “That means the mother has thought: ‘This is hopeless, get out’.”
Good chance
At first it looked good: “The vet tied off the umbilical cord and examined the puppy. The lungs and heart sounded good, although her breathing was fast and her temperature slightly increased. The puppy weighs 8.2 kilos, a good weight,” the shelter said. Despite that, the pup still didn’t make it.
There is no further investigation into the death of the pup.
