Sea of flames destroys parked truck along A37

A truck parked along the A37 near Klazienaveen caught fire early this morning due to an unknown cause. The conflagration that arose within a short time has largely destroyed the vehicle.

The driver, who according to a bystander was sleeping in the car, noticed the fire just after 6 a.m. He then called in the fire brigade, but before the emergency services arrived on the scene, the truck could no longer be saved.

Firefighters extinguished the fire, which released quite a bit of smoke. The parking lot of the A37 towards Germany, where the fire raged, was closed for a while but has now reopened. As far as is known, the driver was unharmed.

An expert from the fire service is still present at the parking bay and is investigating whether hazardous substances may have been released during the fire. The truck would have been on its way with a load of salt.
