The Scorpions have announced that they no longer want to play in Russia for the time being. Due to the war in Ukraine, the German hard rock band wanted to show solidarity and instead prefer to perform there after the war.

“I don’t see that we’ll perform in Russia again,” explained guitarist Matthias Jabs at one interview with the “Mannheim Morning”. “Our generation rubs their eyes in wonder every morning. We wake up, hear the news – and go to bed with the terrible pictures from the Ukraine,” adds singer Klaus Meine. Due to his Hanoverian origins, he also knows Gerhard Schröder well. The former Chancellor has had a close relationship with Vladimir Putin for years. When asked if he could understand Schröder, the singer answered clearly: “No”.

“Wind Of Change” and the Ukraine rewrite

The Scorpions have been popular in Russia since the late 80’s. They were the first western hard rock group to perform there in Soviet times, and their 1991 hit “Wind Of Change” became something of an anthem during the disintegration of the Eastern Bloc. However, the song has since been rewritten to dedicate it to Ukraine. Instead of “Follow the Moskva/ Down to Gorky Park” it now reads “Now listen to my heart/ It says Ukrainia”. After the rewrite, it cracked 1 billion views on YouTube.
