Scoring candy all the time, Kwakershof residential complex goes big in Sint Maarten

Equipped with lanterns and backpacks, dozens of children will enter the Kwakershof residential community in Enkhuizen tonight. This year they are going big on Sint Maarten. The residents have decorated the complex with hundreds of candles and lanterns.

When you step inside it’s like a fairytale. There are hundreds of candles in the courtyard. There is also a sea of lights in the stairwell, at the elevator and at everyone’s front door. Lanterns hang all around the balconies. The Kwakershof party committee started decorating yesterday. “And finished the rest today,” says secretary Cees Bijl proudly.

The Kwakershof residential community celebrated last year its 20th anniversary. The residents are closely connected to each other, help each other where necessary and thus form a unique residential community. It’s about togetherness. And that is noticeable tonight.

As the evening progresses it becomes busier. Also notices Cor Groot, oldest resident of the Kwakershof. Next week 91 spring young. “This is really nice. I’m used to it, because I’ve been here for twenty years! I prefer to participate myself, but I don’t walk very well anymore. So I just stay at the door,” he jokes.

He doesn’t have much time to talk, because in the meantime the next group of children is already at the door. Hidden behind lanterns, but also behind backpacks full of candy. “We actually come here every year to get candy,” says one girl. “Because it’s really big here.” And for that matter, it’s easy to score candy. Cees Bijl: “Certainly. Someone already made the comment. They come straight in and leave in shock because of the amount of candy they get.”
