Scooter driver picked off the A27 hard shoulder: ‘Mister wanted to drive to Utrecht’

A scooter rider was picked off the highway between Hilversum and Utrecht last night. Although he knew it was not allowed, the man drove his scooter on the emergency lane. The police fined the man.

The scooter rider was seen by a road inspector William van Rijkswaterstaat, who encountered him during his last round of checks. .

William stopped the man and asked why he could be found on the highway with a scooter that couldn’t go faster than 50 kilometers per hour.

‘Fastest way to Utrecht’

The scooter driver said he was on his way to Utrecht. “Mister stated that he wanted to drive to Utrecht and did not know the exact way”, says road inspector William. “Someone pointed out this road to him as the fastest way to Utrecht.”

William escorted the scooter driver to the exit. The police were waiting for him there. The man said that he knew that his antics were dangerous, but that despite the danger he still decided to take the highway with his scooter.

The man has been fined. The police and William then explained to him how he should drive to Utrecht.
