Scoop: Roman ship sails on old Leiearm
During the biennial Gallo-Roman weekend in Wervik, we go back in time some 2000 years. Reenactors from all over Europe bring Roman times back to life and introduce visitors to the way of life and customs of that time. Shipping was already part of Gallo-Roman life at the time, so that aspect from that time should not be missing either. That is why a faithful replica of a Roman rowing boat sails on an old Leiearm. The German University of Erlangen developed a meticulous reconstruction of the boat based on an archaeological dig. The Fridericiana Alexandrina Navis was worked on for 18 months, using the traditional groove and tongue construction method. The boat was immediately on display in our country for the first time.
