With the sun-drenched Pentecost weekend just around the corner, it will probably be stormy again in the North Holland ice cream parlors in the coming days. Ice cream farmers invent the most special flavours, to lure customers in looking for refreshment. NH did a tour of the salons and listed five new striking flavors.
1. Avocado
Delicious: avocado on your bread. Or in a salad. But like ice cream? At ice cream parlor Di Fiorentina in Heiloo they put it to the test. “The color is not necessarily attractive, but the taste is good. It is made from pure avocados. Customers like a bit of a challenge, so it sells well!”, says the ice cream maker.
2. Texel stream
On the way to Texel you can already taste the island a bit. At De Schepper in Julianadorp they have made an ice cream flavor from the typical Texel liqueur ‘Texelsstroompje’. The ice cream parlor does not want to reveal the recipe, but it is likely that some of the liqueur is included. It tastes like stroopwafel.
3. Gin Tonic
Another special taste from De Schepper in Julianadorp is the Gin Tonic. In drink form, this cocktail has long earned its stripes, but as an ice cream it will take some getting used to for some. If you don’t feel like the classic drink, order it in ice form. Here too they did not want to reveal the recipe, but it will contain something from Gin and Tonic. So pay attention if you still have to get into the car afterwards.
4. Roses and Violets
If you want to take ‘tasting spring’ literally, you can go to the IJsparadijs in Haarlem. There they decided to turn roses and violets into ice cream flavour. It doesn’t sell as well as the regular banana flavor yet, but despite that, the ice cream parlor says there is a lot of demand for it.
5. Lemon Meringue Cookies
You can’t make it with a simple cookie flavor these days, they know that at the IJparadijs in Haarlem. So they’re taking a different tack this year. Throw together biscuit pieces, egg white foam and some other secret ingredients and you have: Cookies Lemon Meringue flavour. According to the IJsparadijs it is a cold blast.
