Schulze Topphoff best German in Madrid

At the international five-star show jumping tournament in Madrid, 24-year-old Philipp Schulze Topphoff (Havixbeck) took the best place from a German point of view. Schulze Topphoff finished fourth in the saddle of Clemens de la Lande.

The former European champion of the U21 show jumpers completed the round without making any mistakes, but incurred three time penalty points and thus missed the jump-off.

Victory in Madrid went to Edwina Tops-Alexander, who competed for Australia, on Fellow Castlefield. This pair was the only one to remain in circulation and jump-off without penalty. The Dane Andreas Schou secured second place on Darc de Lux ahead of the Dutchman Jur Vrieling on Long John Silver. In the jump-off, the second and third-placed teams only had to record one penalty point for exceeding the allowed time. 40 couples were on the starting list in Madrid, only three of them could qualify for the jump-off with clear rounds.

In addition to Schulze Topphoff, four other riders from Germany were at the start. Patrick Stühlmeyer (Steinfeld) and Drako de Maugre collected an obstacle and time error in the course, so that they ended up in 16th place with five penalty points. Gerrit Nieberg (Sendenhorst) and Ben made four mistakes in the obstacles, Katrin Eckermann (Sassenberg) and Cala Mandia dropped out after a fall and Christian Kukuk (Riesenbeck) decided not to finish the course in Mumbai after two mistakes in the obstacles.

Madrid was the fourth of 15 stages of the Global Champions Tour show jumping series, plus the playoffs in November in Prague. In July, the only German stage of the tour in Riesenbeck is on the calendar. Riesenbeck is stage number ten.
