Schult wants to say goodbye to Wolfsburg with an eighth cup win, goalkeeper moves to the USA – NDR – Regional

Only number two in the DFB goal at the moment

The serious illness – past. Schult looks to the future. And so not only to the cup final against the “Torbienen”, but also to the European Championship in England (July 6th to 31st). There, the DFB selection will meet Denmark, Spain and Finland in the preliminary round and will probably have to stretch themselves against this strong competition to make it into the quarter-finals. It is now rather unlikely that Schult will guard the housing of the DFB selection in the motherland of football. Merle Frohms, her successor to the upcoming series at VfL, has proven herself as number one after Schult was absent in 2019 due to a shoulder operation and her baby break.

The planned DFB comeback of the twin mother this year was destroyed first by the corona pandemic and then by shoulder problems. In preparation for the European Championship, the only thing left is the dress rehearsal against Switzerland on June 24th.

Schult can imagine returning to Germany

However, Schult has not yet given up the fight for the regular place in the goal of the record European champions. “Of course I want to make the decision as difficult as possible for the national coach,” said the 64-time national player, who would also place herself behind Frohms (“We appreciate each other”) in England: “I’ll do everything to that this team is successful at the European Championship because we can win the title.” For the 31-year-old it would be the second European Championship title after 2013. And of course another excellent reference before joining Angel City FC in the USA.

“Of course it’s not out of the question to play in Germany again, but there aren’t that many clubs in Germany that I would play for.”
— Almuth Schult

It is not yet certain whether she will eventually end her eventful career in the USA, her first posting abroad. “Of course it’s not impossible to play in Germany again, but there aren’t that many clubs in Germany that I would play for,” explained Schult. VfL Wolfsburg, the club with which she celebrated six championships, the Champions League in 2013 and seven cup victories to date, should certainly be one of them.
