Schubert climbs to EM gold

The Olympic bronze medalist Jakob Schubert from Austria won gold in the new Olympic combination at the end of the climbing competitions at the European Championships in Munich.

In the duel of bouldering and lead, the multiple world champion prevailed with 175.6 points ahead of lead European champion Adam Ondra from the Czech Republic (170.8) and Olympic champion Alberto Gines Lopez from Spain (151.7).

The German top climbers Alexander Megos and Yannick Flohe could not qualify for the combined final of the eight best climbers. In the overall standings from the two individual competitions, they took ninth and tenth place.

The day before, Hannah Meul had just missed a second medal in fourth place in the combination. She had previously climbed to silver in bouldering. Her medal was the only one for the team of the German Alpine Association (DAV) in the eight European Championship competitions.

The new form of the combination is the second Olympic discipline alongside speed climbing from Paris 2024. Therefore, DAV sports director Martin Veith was “a bit disappointed” that there were no Germans in the men’s combined final. But he also emphasized: “We have achieved the goal for Munich”.
