Schoonoord gets new primary schools, then ‘multifunctional center’

The construction of the new primary schools in Schoonoord will start “as soon as possible”. This is reported by the municipality of Covoeren. The primary schools will be permanently built on the south side of the Sportparklaan. Later, the complex will also be expanded into a so-called ‘multifunctional center’ (MFC), with accommodation for childcare, library and associations.

Construction will therefore take place in phases, the municipality writes in a press release. “There is sufficient space at the intended location to quickly start with new accommodation for the schools and then to expand it in phases to an MFC.”

“Both primary schools CBS De Slagkrooi and OBS Burgemeester Van Royenschool are anxiously awaiting new accommodation,” says alderman Joop Slomp. “Both school buildings have been on the list for replacement for some time, because they are technically and functionally outdated.”

The construction of the schools and the MFC is a project worth millions. The costs of the schools are (currently) at 5.3 million euros. The further expansion of the complex into a multifunctional center will cost between 10 and 12 million.

The city council must still approve the plan for primary schools on March 21. After that, the council will consider the expansion to MFC. Part of this is whether the sports hall will be refurbished or whether a new one will have to be built. That decision is scheduled for the end of this year.
