Schoonebeek misses golden opportunity, Gasselternijveen now on ‘pole’

Within a minute, Schoonebeek’s mission was dealt a major blow. Jeroen Mens got the ball perfectly under his feet and made it 0-1. Ten minutes later, Lars Meijer even put the score at 0-2.

Then the home team came back into the game. Leon Steffens made the 1-2 and twenty minutes later, Jesper Swieters scored the equalizer. Once again, however, it was Lars Meijer who gave Sleen the lead before half-time.

In the second half Sleen ran out to 2-4 through a goal by Jasper Ruinemans and with that the game seemed to be over. Niek Huser took another goal in the final phase, but it was not enough to avert a defeat.

Even with a win, Schoonebeek was still dependent on the result between Gasselternijveen and Balkbrug, but where Schoonebeek made a mistake, Gasselternijveen remained clear. Niek Poppinga and Joep Meertens provided a comfortable lead before the break. In the second half the score was slightly more balanced and Balkbrug managed to make two, but Brandon Meems’ goal determined the result at 3-2.

Schoonebeek drops to third place with one point behind Gasselternijveen. Next week, Schoonebeek will play against DVC’59 and Gasselternijveen against Buinen. Schoonebeek has to win himself and hope for a loss of points from Gasselternijveen to have a chance of direct promotion. If Gasselternijveen wins, they will be promoted for sure.

If that is the case, Schoonebeek will enter the play-offs and then the number 12 of the third division D will wait on Sunday 12 and 19 June. The winner of those two matches will play football in the third division next season.
