Scholz: The country cannot be transformed without craftsmanship

By Andrea Thomas

BERLIN (Dow Jones) — Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz has emphasized the importance of craftsmanship for the country’s conversion to climate neutrality. After visiting entrepreneur women in crafts in the east German city of Cottbus, Scholz said one of the major challenges was getting enough young people to choose a trade. The craft is the most important training in Germany. Germany needs enough skilled workers.

“I am firmly convinced that if we want to achieve everything we have set out to do for our country, then we will only succeed with strong craftsmanship,” said Scholz. Girls and women also have to get excited about the craft.

Because the energy transition will not succeed if nobody climbs onto the roofs, installs the new systems and if the buildings are not constructed according to future requirements.

Germany must also break with time-consuming traditions and reduce bureaucracy. Here can digitalization help. Because that way you can be faster, also with the approvals and planning. The aim is that the “Germany speed” that Germany has shown in the construction of the liquid gas terminals can also be seen everywhere else.

Scholz also suggested that “professionalism” should also be a criterion for the professionalism of the execution of craft activities. So maybe not everything has to be checked again if a master did it, says Scholz.
