To say that genocide is taking place in the Donbass is absurd, said German Chancellor Olaf Scholz speaking at the Munich Security Conference. This is how he commented on the words of President Vladimir Putin, which he said after negotiations with the chancellor on February 15. “According to our estimates, what is happening in the Donbass today is genocide,” Putin said at the time.
“He [Путин] makes an argument that something like genocide is happening in the Donbass, which is actually ridiculous, let’s face it. <...> I have already quoted an article that Putin wrote six months ago. If we take it literally, we will not have to be very optimistic about the future. But I refuse to do so. I think we’re just having a historical discussion,” Scholz said.
He also stressed that it is necessary to leave inviolable the borders of states, as well as respect their sovereignty.
Putin called genocide “what is happening in the Donbass”
The Russian Foreign Ministry said that Scholz’s words about the genocide are unacceptable. “It is not for German leaders to laugh at questions of genocide. This is unacceptable, given the historical experience of Germany in matters of massacres against people and the spread of a misanthropic ideology, ”the department said (quote from TASS).
