Scholz appeals to China to influence Moscow because of the war

BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – According to his own statements, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) has again appealed to the Chinese government to exert its influence on Russia with regard to its war of aggression in Ukraine. That’s what Scholz said after the German-Chinese government consultations at a joint appearance with China’s Prime Minister Li Qiang in the Chancellery in Berlin. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China has “a very special task”.

Scholz emphasized that it was important that China did not continue to supply weapons “to the aggressor Russia” and recalled his visit to China in November, during which it was made clear, together with President Xi Jinping, that there was no threat and “especially none use” of nuclear weapons. “That remains unchanged and I am grateful for this common clear position.”

Scholz stressed the right to territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine. “Peaceful coexistence worldwide is based on this rule-based international order, not on the power of the stronger.” Boundaries must endure. No country should look at other countries as their backyard and try to use force to shift borders. “Imperialism is never the solution”./jr/DP/tih
