Scholz and von der Leyen prepare Ukraine reconstruction conference

ELMAU (dpa-AFX) – According to Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD), the reconstruction of Ukraine after the Russian war of aggression against the country should be discussed at a large conference. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and he would have planned to prepare such a conference together, said Scholz on Tuesday at the end of the three-day G7 summit at Schloss Elmau in Bavaria. There they wanted to talk to many others about how a country as large as Ukraine, which had been so militarily destroyed, could be rebuilt.

“It will not be an effort over a few years, but over many years,” said Scholz – and as far as the financial consequences are concerned, much longer. The world community must act together here – with an overall concept that has to be developed with researchers and experts from the OECD, the World Bank and others and that has worked for many decades. It is about a “gigantic task”.

“We need a Marshall Plan for Ukraine, which must also be well planned and developed, that’s what we have set ourselves,” Scholz emphasized before the G7 summit. Between 1948 and 1952, the USA had helped Germany and other European countries to get back on their feet after the Second World War with the Marshall Plan.

The final paper of the G7 summit states: “We are determined to support the Ukrainian reconstruction through an international reconstruction conference and an international reconstruction plan, which will be drawn up and implemented by Ukraine in close coordination with international partners.”/ctt/tam /bk/cy/mfi/aha/hrz/DP/jha
