“Outlined problem” at Wolfsburg
Wolfsburg’s sports director Jörg Schmadtke reacted angrily to public criticism by VfL professional Renato Steffen of former coach Florian Kohfeldt. “I think you don’t do something like that,” Schmadtke told the “Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung”. “The way he says it sums up the problem we had last season quite well. Many have pushed problems away from themselves instead of taking responsibility for themselves. It would also have been good for Renato to spend more time with himself.”
The 30-year-old winger made negative comments about Kohfeldt, who will be replaced by Niko Kovac for the new season, at a media event with the Swiss national team on Friday. “The last six months have definitely been one of the most difficult phases of my career. I had never experienced such problems with a coach,” said Steffen.
The Swiss has been active for VfL since January 2018 and is now considering an early departure. In 2021/22, the left-footed player made 26 appearances for the “Wolves” for a total of 1,270 minutes.
