Schiphol and the unions want to recruit five hundred extra security personnel to prevent chaos at the airport this summer. The parties will recruit workers from other sectors by making the working conditions more attractive.
Every effort will also be made to improve traffic flow within Schiphol. Security guards, cleaners and employees in baggage handling, check-in desks and private bus transport will receive a summer allowance of EUR 5.25 per hour worked from 1 June. The surcharge applies until Monday 5 September and applies retroactively to the two weeks during the May holiday.
“This social plan is an important step towards the summer and we will use it to attract new people and retain employees,” said Schiphol CEO Dick Benschop. “It mainly concerns security guards, but also cleaners. We will increase our recruitment campaigns in the coming period.”
Those who travel via Schiphol have been dealing with queues that are so long that some even miss their flight for weeks. It is expected that it will remain busy until the summer as the outflow of employees is still large.
There are currently 500 vacancies for security guards. Erik Honkoop, director of CNV Vakmensen, emphasizes that it is inevitable that cannibalization also takes place: in other words, attracting security officers from other sectors. “Extra money for the employees is therefore the only button we can turn.”
