Travelers at Schiphol must take into account longer waiting times in the coming May and summer holidays than before the corona crisis. According to the airport, the shortage of staff can make it busier, especially during peak times than during the holiday periods of 2019. Schiphol is urgently looking for new airport staff.
Today there was a large job market in The Base office complex at Schiphol to recruit new staff. The more than 450 visitors had a choice: there are thousands of vacancies to fill in security, flight handling, cleaning, catering and transport. passenger assistance and check-in counters.
Organizer Francien David of the Aviation Community Schiphol (LCS) thinks the job market will help to solve part of the staff shortage: “We have 25 companies here that do everything they can to get these people in their training period as quickly as possible. up and running to get. I am convinced that this will contribute a lot to the demand that there is now for the May and summer holidays.”

Joost van Doesburg of FNV Schiphol is positive about the job market. The trade unionist regularly clashes with airport management about the terms of employment and the treatment of staff. Nevertheless, the employers and FNV came to a conclusion last month an agreement for a new collective labor agreement for ground staff.
Summer chaos
“Quite a lot of people came,” says Van Doesburg. “But if you then look at the May and summer crowds, will they make it with this? Probably not.” The union fears a repeat of the summer of last year† Partly due to the shortage of staff, chaotic scenes with long queues arose.
Just before the May holiday, Schiphol wants to start warning travelers via campaigns, the app and website and prepare them for the crowds.
