Artists who fled to the Netherlands because of the Russian aggression in Ukraine can make use of a support scheme. Earlier this year, the cabinet announced that it would release €1 million so that these makers from Ukraine and Russia can temporarily continue to practice their cultural and creative professions in the Netherlands. The Ministries of Education, Culture and Science (OCW) and Foreign Affairs (BZ) have each made €500,000 available.

The scheme was developed on behalf of the 6 national culture funds: the Netherlands Film Fund, the Netherlands Foundation for Literature, the Mondriaan Fund, the Performing Arts Fund, the Creative Industries Fund NL and the Cultural Participation Fund. The Netherlands Foundation for Literature has elaborated the scheme and acts as secretary. The scheme and the application form can be found on the website of the Dutch Foundation for Literature, as well as an English summary.

For all cultural sectors

The scheme is intended for temporary support for refugee professional makers in all cultural sectors: visual arts, creative industry, heritage, film, literature, cultural education and the performing arts. A maximum of € 9,900 is available per request. The subsidy is requested for the makers by Dutch cultural institutions. The Dutch institution can either submit applications for a maximum of 3 individual makers, or submit 1 application for a group of a maximum of 15 people.

With the subsidy, makers can, for example, finance a residence or studio space, realize a performance or purchase aids such as equipment, tools or materials, so that they can temporarily continue their work in the Netherlands. In this way they can help build cultural life in Ukraine as soon as it is possible again.
