Schalke: Schröder & Knäbel on transfers – “Learn to say no”

Schröder & Knäbel on transfers

According to sporting director Rouven Schröder, Bundesliga returnees FC Schalke 04 are now perceived differently on the transfer market than they used to be. One reason for this was the financial requirements after relegation to the 2nd Bundesliga. “We had to learn to say no. And make it clear to the players that we don’t buy the famous schnapps here anymore. That certainly brought us cancellations,” said Schröder in a joint interview with sports director Peter Knäbel in the “world on Sunday“.

According to him, Schröder was able to sign players even if the necessary departures could only have been realized afterwards. Knäbel enforced this approach. He praised Schröder for putting the team together and realigning it. “He placed a lot of value on the personality and character of the players. The promotion would not have been possible without Rouven,” explained Knäbel.

According to Schröder, the key to promotion was something typical for Schalke. “The incredible power that can only be expressed when we act as a community,” said the 46-year-old. “And I remind everyone who now wants to look too far into the future and believes that Schalke can achieve more than staying in the class,” he added. The euphoria could “be over very quickly at Schalke”.
