Midfielder Tauer, who was loaned out from Mainz 05 last January, should move very quickly. The Rheinhessen home-grown player only made two appearances with the professionals during the first half of the season in Gelsenkirchen. According to information from the newspaper, the loan deal with FSV, which originally ran until June 2024, will be terminated early; Tauer will most likely also join Schalke’s relegation-threatened league rivals Eintracht Braunschweig on loan in the second half of the season. Should the agreement with Lower Saxony fail in the last few meters, two other second division teams would be specifically interested in the services of the Mainz professional.

There are also signs of a change for Cissé, who moved to the Royal Blues from Gent on a free transfer in 2022. The central defender, whose contract runs until 2026 and who has only made two professional appearances since then, is reportedly returning to Belgium. He is set to join second division club SV Zulte Waregem on loan. Mali’s U23 national player was unable to assert himself under Frank Kramer, Thomas Reis or, most recently, Karel Geraerts.
Update January 2nd, 8:28 a.m.: On Tuesday morning, S04 announced the squad for the upcoming winter training camp in the Algarve – without Tauer and Cissé. The former is in final discussions with another club, Cissé is training individually in Gelsenkirchen in order to be able to hold possible discussions about a change from there.
