Schalke: DFB coach Hansi Flick leaves the World Cup door open for Simon Terodde

Schalke’s record scorer

DFB coach Hansi Flick praised second division top scorer Simon Terodde for his outstanding goal record at promoted FC Schalke 04 and gave him a minimal chance of making the national team and taking part in the World Cup. The 34-year-old Terodde had just described international matches for Germany as a personal dream.

“Simon Terodde is a striker who scores a lot of goals – now in the second division,” said Flick on Thursday in a media round announcing the current international squad. As expected, the veteran Terodde, who scored 30 goals this season for Schalke, does not appear in this. “We will now see how it looks next season, whether he can score goals in the first division,” remarked Flick cautiously. In the end, what applies to all World Cup candidates applies to him: “If he plays at a top level – that’s the Bundesliga – and performs well there and scores his goals, all doors and gates are open.” Flick emphasized that it was “Outstanding how Terodde has scored goals in recent years. He has a good rate.”

Terodde on a possible DFB nomination: “Then of course I’m ready”

In a “Sport1” interview, Terodde described games with the national team as his “big dream”. With a view to the World Cup in Qatar at the end of the year, he remarked: “If Hansi Flick should really come to the decision at the end that he needs a striker for Qatar who is up front and scores goals, and then he should also think of me, then then I am of course ready. But right now I’m not thinking too much about it.”

The center forward set the goal record of 30 goals in the past season last weekend. Never before has a professional from the “Royal Blues” been able to boast such a rate in the league; Sven Demandt last managed this in the 2nd Bundesliga in the 1988/89 season in the jersey of Fortuna Düsseldorf. The 34-year-old top scorer announced that he was far from wasting his thoughts on the end of his career – rather, the Bocholter native also wanted “to step on the gas next season with my kind and put my stamp on it”, he “is now getting into the best striker age”.
