Best earner in the S04 squad

After a long injury break, Salif Sané worked his way back into the team at FC Schalke 04, collecting regular playing times under coach Dimitrios Grammozis for the first time in 2022. The central defender, who has only been able to convince in phases since moving from Hanover to Gelsenkirchen, now spoke in an interview with the portal “t-online.de‘ about his long suffering. The future of the 31-year-old is still open, Sané’s contract expires at the end of the season.

“I feel very good. After my long break, it’s a relief to finally be back on the pitch with my colleagues. In my first minute on the field, I felt like a little kid,” said the 38-time Senegalese international. In the 5-0 win against Erzgebirge Aue in mid-January, Sané played a game over 90 minutes for the first time since May 2021. After three games in the starting eleven, Marcin Kaminski (30) was back in the Royal Blues’ back three in the most recent 2-1 defeat in Düsseldorf.

Only during his first season at Schalke in 2018/19 did Sané, who was committed for 7 million euros, remain injury-free, especially the knee caused the right foot problems again and again. The situation also had a psychological impact on him: “After the first injury, I kept having minor ailments that threw me back. That was very difficult for my head. I had never had such a phase in my time as a professional footballer.”

With regard to the injured knee, however, doctors gave him hope that “there are football players who have the same problem and still continue to play.” Bundesliga with S04.

Schalke defender Sané: Contract expires, future still open

It is unclear to what extent the club plans to continue with Sané beyond the season. His working paper is dated June 2022, and over the past three and a half years his market value has fallen from EUR 22 million to currently EUR 800,000.

The central defender is considered the last remaining professional in the squad who still has a high-paying contract from the Bundesliga days. According to reports his annual salary is around 5 million euroswhat makes him the best earner. At least under these conditions, an extension at the financially troubled second division club seems impossible, even in the event of promotion.
