FC Schalke 04 did their duty in a commanding manner and won the first round of the DFB Cup at Bremer SV.

Frank Kramer’s competitive debut as coach of the Royal Blues ended on Sunday (07/31/2022) with a 5-0 (4-0) win. After all, Bremen’s defeat wasn’t as severe as in the previous season, when they lost 12-0 to FC Bayern Munich.

Royal Blues in Oldenburg in the majority

The climber to the regional league was far from a home game. The majority of the 10,000 spectators supported FC Schalke, and the stadium was the home of third division club VfB Oldenburg because their own does not meet the requirements of the German Football Association.

Cross from the left, Drexler volley

The Gelsenkirchen fans cheered after 118 seconds when Rodrigo Zalazar pushed a header from Tobias Morh over the line. It was a very bad start for Bremer SV, because a little later there was a legitimate penalty for the Bundesliga club. However, Malte Seemann saved the shot from Sebastian Polter, who switched to FC Schalke from neighboring VfL Bochum in the summer (5th).

Dominick Drexler, who missed the margin, caught up seven minutes later and scored a volley on the bottom left to make it 2-0. The 3-0 followed the same pattern: Cross from the left, Drexler hits a volley on the second post (33′).

Polter misses many chances

Schalke had many other good chances, but Polter in particular sometimes missed miserably. After all, he had a decisive part in the 4-0 (39th) when he pushed Sebastian Kmiec so hard that he scored an own goal.

In the second half, the Bundesliga club limited themselves to making ends meet without injuries and with as little loss of substance as possible. Because Bremen also became a bit braver, even Schalke goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow got a bit of work, which he did competently to the outsider’s annoyance.

Schalke scored the last goal of the afternoon at the Marschweg Stadium. Marcin Kamiński scored with a header after Mohr’s corner kick (83′).

Start of the Bundesliga at 1. FC Köln

At the start of the Bundesliga, Schalke will play at 1. FC Köln on Sunday (07.08.2022).
