Schalke binds DFB talent Assan Ouédraogo with the option of a professional contract

Captain of the German U17

Assan Ouédraogo, captain of the German U17 national team, has received a long-term development contract with Schalke 04. That doesn’t make the 16-year-old midfielder a professional yet, but he could still become one as part of this agreement. The S04 have the option to convert the contract into a license player contract, as the club announced on Wednesday. That would then be valid until 2027. The teenager is already active in the U19s this season.

“Assan brings an incredible amount to be successful in professional football: He’s tall, dynamic, technically adept and equipped with a high level of game intelligence,” declared Schalke’s youth director Mathias Schober. “Physically, he certainly needs to improve, but that’s quite normal at his age. We will support him in taking the necessary steps together in the coming years so that he can bring his full potential to the pitch. At this point I would like to thank all the trainers, supervisors and other supporters who accompany the path of our talents competently and highly motivated – like at Assan in the past eight years.

S04 Sport Board Member Peter Knäbel added in general to the youth work in the so-called Knappenschmiede of the Royal Blues: “We are looking at interesting vintages with some promising talents who can advance to the licensed team in the coming years. Despite relegation and Corona, the board has kept the Knappenschmiede budget stable, which will pay off in the years to come. Assan Ouédraogo is an example of the valuable work in our youth academy. I’m excited to see how his development will continue.”
