Historically poor goal tally
License area manager Gerald Asamoah sees FC Schalke 04 on the right track despite the fifth game without a win in 2023. “There’s a lot going against us. Nevertheless, we have to look ahead. If you look at the development that the team has taken in the last few games,” said Asamoah on Friday after the 0-0 draw against VfL Wolfsburg – Schalke’s third goalless draw in a row.
“We deserved it immensely. We just don’t have the luck,” said the 44-year-old ex-national player. “Three to zero sounds good, but you still have to score up front.” So far there have been 14 out of 20 games – by far the weakest result of all clubs in the upper house. Historically, only seven teams have had worse hits-per-game statistics than Gelsenkirchen after 20 matchdays. At S04, these are currently 0.7.
Schalke-Bank since Breitenreiter: Only Büskens came close to scoring
Schalke, who are still without a win this year, are bottom of the Bundesliga table with twelve points. The gap to the non-relegation places is at least seven points after this matchday. Asamoah, meanwhile, continues to believe in staying in the class in view of the playful development of the promoted team. “Now it’s time to keep going, keep going. At some point it will work out,” says Asamoah. “The development is already there. It’s just missing that one ball that goes over the line.”
Coach Thomas Reis’ team even scored goals against Wolfsburg. Goals from Alex Král (50th minute) and Michael Frey (76th) were disallowed for offside. “It hurts so bad,” commented goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann on “DAZN” about the goals that were not given. “We need three points, no ifs or buts,” he said with a view to the upcoming tasks. Defender Maya Yoshida said: “We can still do anything. The development is positive. We just need goals. But that’s the most difficult thing in football.”
