Schalke 04 signed Alexander Schwolow on loan from Hertha

Alexander Schwolow was not happy at Hertha and even lost his regular place. Now he is about to change clubs – and joins Schalke 04.

Alexander Schwolow is moving from Hertha BSC to FC Schalke 04. The Ruhrpott club confirmed this on Wednesday. The keeper is loaned out for a year, according to “Sky” there is no purchase option.

Schalke was looking for a new number one this summer because promotion goalkeeper Martin Fraisl’s contract expired and was not renewed. Schwolow, who was still under contract at SC Freiburg at the time, wanted to move to Gelsenkirchen two years ago. However, the deal fell through because Schalke lacked the financial means.

“In Alexander we have gained an experienced keeper who will give our team stability. He has shown the quality he has in all of his previous positions,” sporting director Rouven Schröder was quoted as saying on Schalke’s Twitter account.

Schwolow has been between the posts 55 times since the summer of 2020 at Hertha. However, the 30-year-old didn’t really know how to impress and was even replaced as first-choice goalkeeper by Marcel Lotka at the end of last season.
