FC Schalke 04 has parted ways with coach Dimitrios Grammozis. The club announced this early on Sunday morning. “Bild” and “Sky Sport News” had previously reported in unison.
“We have reached the phase of the season in which the big decisions are made. We were no longer convinced that our target, promotion to the Bundesliga, was still sufficiently likely in the current constellation,” said S04 – Sporting director Rouven Schröder quoted in the statement. “We therefore believe that the team needs a new impetus in the season finale.”
Schalke had only got four points from the last four games and had fallen to sixth place in the table. Last Saturday there was a bitter 3: 4 home defeat against relegation candidate Hansa Rostock. The gap between the Royal Blues (41 points) and relegation place 3 is already 4 points. “The team has lacked the necessary consistency since the beginning of the year, both in terms of the result and in particular the central performance parameters,” explains board member Peter Knäbel. “It’s that consistency that teams looking to move up the ladder need.”
Grammozis took over Schalke in March 2021, started the transition to the second division and wanted to get promoted directly. The club management paid tribute to the 43-year-old in the statement: “He took over FC Schalke 04 in a very difficult phase and stabilized the club after relegation and reconstruction in the 2nd Bundesliga. We wish him all the best for the future. “
